When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
-- William Shakespeare, Sonnet 30, 1609 --
Saskia Vervoort (NL-1967) is a photographer whose work is based on history and remembrance, be it personal, or inspired by places and stories she encounters.
There is a sense of timelessness and nostalgia in her images. Strongly influenced by history, art, and literature, current times are usually not visibly present and she tends to work towards an abstract and personal aesthetic.
The soft monochromatic shades of grays and blacks, for her, are calming and safe. In this current world that is so frenetic and overstimulated, the quiet images allow you to pause and reflect.
Saskia trained at the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in Applied and Conceptual Photography. She has a Master’s degree in History of Art at the University of Leiden (1994) and a degree in Interior Styling at the Academie Artemis in Amsterdam (1998). She’s currently a member of the collective Studio 307, an Amsterdam based group of photographers working on long term projects under supervision of Milan Gies and Sarah Mei Herman.
Based in Amsterdam, she works as an autonomous photographer on her own projects and as a portrait photographer but is always open to talk about collaborations and assignments and you can contact her here.
